    Dear Max,

Thank you for making such a great website. It has been very helpfull in many ways.

I just updated to ICS via the update file from your website. It worked perfectly! Only I now miss the versatility of root.

Is it possible to root when ICS has been installed? I read somewhere that it is not possible. Can I root the same way as posted on your website.

I am looking forward to your reply!.

    Kind Regards

    Amsterdam, The Netherlands

  19. Jeff says:

Great site. Thank you for maintaining it. My question relates to the reception issues of the Nexus S 4g. I get very poor reception with the stock ROM in an area that has a strong Sprint signal, not to mention weak WIFI reception right next to the router. I am trying to find out if any of the custom ROMs will improve the reception issues? I’ve spent a lot of time looking, but I can’t find a definitive answer.

As I am probably not alone with this issue, how could we reroot our device ?

    • Yannick says:

I finally solved the issue : as the phone was still UNLOCKED in bootloader, flashed again recovery and installed Superuser

      • kamal says:

i am facing the same problem, my phone was rooted, then got ICS updated. now it is not rooted but still unlocked. i tried to go to bootloader, it would not let me. a crashed android logo pops up. then i cant do nothing. i would remove battery and then make my phone work.
        please advise.

        • kamal says:

UPDATE: i can go to bootloader, when i click Recovery Mode, phone crashes and a crashed android logo shows up.

  31. James says:

Hey, how do you check whether your phone is rooted or not?
The thing is, I have never or even tried to root my phone but my phone had some issues so I sent it to service. When it was fixed and came back into my hands, there was this unlocked padlock under the Google logo while it was booting and in the bootloader screen, the bootloader lock state is stated as “Unlocked.” Doesn’t that mean that my phone has been rooted? I initially thought that the unlocked padlock meant that it’s sim unlocked but now that I saw the bootloader, starting to think that it was actually rooted.

  38. Mario says:

I rooted my Nexus S 4g with this using your tutorial. However, now some devices don’t recognize the tethering from the wifi tether app that I have. My friend has an Evo 4G, and the device picks it up and connects to it just fine. The only difference is that he’s running Froyo(2.2) instead of Gingerbread (2.3.5). We are both using the same tethering app with the same settings, and we both have Sprint. Do I have to downgrade to Froyo in order to have my wifi work with everything, or is it the actual phone that is giving me problems. Any ideas to what my problem is, and does anyone know any solutions? ty

    • Nexus S Hacks says:

Use the nexus s 4g tether guide on this site.

      • Mario says:

Preciate all the info you have here. It helped me root the phone and get free wifi on my laptop running win7 64bit. I followed your video guide for free tether, but I still can’t get it to work with my other devices. For me it only works with WEXT, and then only Windows will pickup the network. Everything will detect the network, but it won’t hook up to it. When I tried this, the app actually started two networks. (The one I can start in Android, and the one that the app creates). I also didn’t get the routing fix option like you did on the video. It looks like your running an older version of Android. I have vs2.3.5. Does that matter? I’ll gladly donate if you can help me out with this issue, thanks.

My Problem is that the power key is gone bad atleast I think as its not working whenever i prese it it doesnt lock the screen, nor does it wake up the screen, I have tried hard reset etc solutions available out there. The only option left is to replace the power button however that is costing me in India over 1000Rs. which I am not willing to I know a little of electronics so I am willing to take the risk and want to replace the part my self however to do so where can i find the replacement part. Searched the internet no luck or since I am an amateur in this my search is returning me dead results. Can any one help Please.

  49. azore says:

hi, i would like to ask is it possible for you to make a patch for the matr1x kernel so it would be possible to use a call recorder on the nexus s. i simply can’t make any recorder work on my nexus s and for as far as i know there isn’t any one around that actually work with the factory, or any other ROM. it is perfectly legal where i’m from and it would help me a lot.

  54. JP says:

Hi all.. I have a similar problem to one of the other comments. Sprint nexus s 4g stock rjb, currently 4.1.1. followed the guide on here, followed all steps, unlocked bootloader, flashed the img, installed superuser and reboot.
phone was wiped clean, but did have superuser installed. any apps requiring root access are denied, and rootcheck verifies that the phone is not rooted. If I try to recover from bootloader, I get the dead android on his back. I can reflash the img and twrp will come up and I can recover from there, but still no root. I cannot install roms from twrp and there seems to be an issue with twrp mounting and unmounting sd card. I don’t know enough about this to continue without some help. Is this because the root guide and files were created prior to the 4.1.1 update?
Any help is greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance

    • JP says:

okay.. it was an older version of the SU app.. found the new zip and installed it.. all is well! thank you very much for the comprehensive guide!

  55. Adel says:

I need help. I’ve unlocked boot loader and such, installed clockworkmod and twrp recovery and I can access a lot from recovery mode. But when the phone is actually turned on and apps need root access, It says that that I don’t have root access. What do I do to get root access?

PS, when I sue the ADB interface in the command prompt, I enter ‘su’ and it says that the permission was denied.

I recently decided to root my nexus s 4g and I did. had cyanogenmod 10.1 and everything. life was good. but i decided to get the stable 10.0 and I did. Then I went back to 10.1 but it kept failing. I have done everything. unrooted, brought back to stock, rooted again. I Tried diferent kernels, twrp and cwm, diferent rom’s. I cant get any type of custom rom to install. It keeps failing and says status 7. Any ideas. Thanks

  58. Abid Mohsin says:

Will this guide work on the i9020 not the i9020T or i9020A? I live in the UK and my baseband version is i9020XXKI1. If not then can it be updated so I can use it to unroot my Nexus S?

    • Joe Camp says:

I would DL the one click root app for nexus s on your PC or Mac and use that. You can choose which model you have. It may work for yours. You can also choose to unroot and return to stock.

    HI everybody

I dont know if this is the right place to post so my apologies in advance, I need help!

I have a Nexus S running android 4.1.2 Kernel 3.0.31 and I want to install a Kernel and ROM that improves the phone, I want performance, I don’t care about fancy options, I’m not planing to use my phone for anything more than the simple stuff, but as it is right now is terrible, freezes all the time, sometimes doesn’t respond, well is just a mess.

If someone can please tell me what’s the better ROM and Kernel for an optimal performance will be so much appreciate it, I’m not a computer guy and my knowledge of this is 0, my intention is just follow a tutorial and hope my phone survives.

    Thanks in advance.

  64. Vijay says:

    Hi Guys,

I think this forum is dead. I think, they have abandoned this forum. For more help go to xda forums. you might get any help you need. Even if your phone is bricked. One thing about nexus s is that we have lot of people creating custom roms, kernels and apps for us, I believe that you can revive a bricked phone as well. This forum was the one which taught me to root my nexus. I have alteast tried 10 different Roms and Kernels. I feel the best is XenonHD with a matr1x kernel. Its damn smooth. Also just for your info, there will be stuff like TWRP and CWM etcetra which will help you do recovery. But I use “PHILZ_touch” recovery which is pretty easy to use.
But believe me, your battery will exhaust fast once you move to 4.2 from 4.1. Even 4.1 is eating battery , but it all depends on the Apps you use and the duration you use. The more the screen time, the faster the battery drains. This is my observation. May be time to buy a new battery for my Nexus S.
